Currently this blog along with some of my other projects are on a shared hosting platform. As some of my ideas get crazier and crazier, I realize that I need to compile several of the dependencies myself and this has been extremely problematic with my shared host. So what solutions do local geeks use?
Do you self host with a reserved static IP?
Do you collocate at a facility?
Do you rent a dedicated server?
Comments or emails are welcome and thanks in advance!

Nice to see another cakephp nerd in central OR. I am in Eugene myself.
I would look into feynman group ( Eugene local tech services company ) or into upgrading your current shared hosting to a dedicated server or vps.
I recently made a switch from shared to vps on dreamhost and have had such an easier time dealing with custom configs and dependencies than I ever had on shared hosting. It is a bit more expensive though.
@Abba
Yeah, my buddy Vince was saying that VPS is probably the way to go for the price point I am looking at. The sucky thing is that I just freakin migrated hoping that the dependencies would be there. But there is always something you find you need later.
What Virtual OS do you get to run? FreeBSD? Ubuntu?
Thanks for the tip!
For my DH stuff I believe it is a custom Debian build they provide.
On some of the feynman and advomatic boxes I manage we use Fedora. I also have used Ubuntu (overkill for a hosting platform) and Slackware (too much work for a personal hosting platform, maybe if you had experience with it or were setting up a specific server for specific needs)
